Description
The Executive Director–Board relationship is among the most important and complex aspects of nonprofit leadership. Power structures, role ambiguity, and differing perspectives can create tension and conflict. When addressed with intention and skill, these challenges can become the foundation for a productive partnership that amplifies impact. This session equips Executive Directors with practical, proactive approaches to engage in hard conversations, approach conflict in a healthy way, and communicate directly and ethically to cultivate relationships and advance the mission.
In this session, Executive Directors will:
- Recognize the structural and interpersonal dynamics that create tension in Board–ED relationships.
- Differentiate between unproductive conflict and generative conflict.
- Identify key benefits of a healthy Board–ED partnership and how it strengthens the organization’s effectiveness.
- Examine practical, proactive strategies for managing challenging Board interactions.
- Identify a relevant real-world scenario in which they can apply direct, ethical communication in their work with the Board.
